These positions offer opportunities to assist the natural resource coordinator in implementing Story County’s natural resource and roadside program. Major emphasis is on native vegetation management, reconstruction, and restoration in roadsides, prairie remnants, and other natural areas. Assigned tasks will utilize the latest trends in natural resource and vegetation management. Opportunities exist for interns to interact with private landowners and other conservation departments as well as attending workshops and seminars. RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES The Campground Attendant will perform duties including, but not necessarily limited to, restroom cleaning and maintenance, preparing lodges for rental groups, string trimming, cleaning grills and fire rings, interacting with the public, making minor repairs, painting, selling firewood, pruning trees and shrubs, and performing other duties as assigned. WORK HOURS: Variable hours, as agreed upon by the Campground Attendant and Unit Ranger, will include nights, weekends, and holidays. REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, provide his/her own on-site sleep unit for the course of the contract, possess a current, valid driver’s license, and be able to keep accurate records. POSITION: The AmeriCorps members selected for these positions will assist with natural resource management/maintenance on Louisa County Conservation areas. DESCRIPTION: AmeriCorps, the domestic Peace Corps, engages more than 40,000 Americans in community-based service each year. Most AmeriCorps members are selected by and serve with local and national organizations. This Louisa County AmeriCorps member will be involved in assisting with a variety of natural resources-related management practices including prescribed fire; prairie planting, park maintenance; control of non-native species; wetland development and trail maintenance. QUALIFICATIONS: Must have an interest in Iowa’s natural resources and the ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions. Post high school training in Biology, Fish and Wildlife, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies or related field preferred but not required. Valid driver’s license required. Positions are available in a variety of locations throughout the county. Applications will be accepted 12/21/2009 - 2/19/2010 – interviews will be conducted in late February 2010. Rates of pay and a brief overview of duties are as follows: PARK ATTENDANT – $10.25/hour – 6 positions availableDuties include: Campground management; registering campers; some rule enforcement; interaction with park visitors; cleaning facilities; mowing; trail patrol and fee collection; and other general park maintenance activities. Must pass a County physical examination which includes a drug test after offer of hire. Non-standard work week – weekends and holidays may be required. WATERCRAFT CONCESSION MANAGER – $10.25/hr. 2 positions availableDuties include: Coordination and management of canoe and paddleboat concession and canoe trip operation; maintenance of equipment, facilities and vehicles; interaction with park visitors as a park information center; special commercial driver’s license required prior to start of season. Must pass a County physical examination - which includes a drug test after offer of hire, with random testing as determined by the County. Non-standard work week – weekend and holiday work required. NATURAL RESOURCE AIDE - $9.25/hour – 7 positions availableDuties include: General park maintenance activities such as mowing, facility and area clean-up and painting; interaction with park visitors; maintenance of park facilities and minor equipment maintenance. Must pass a County physical examination which includes a drug test after offer of hire. Non-standard work week – weekends and holidays may be required.
